About Companion Exotic Animal Medicine & Surgery Service

The Companion Exotic Animal Medicine & Surgery Service at UC Davis Veterinary Medical Teaching Hospital provides comprehensive medical and surgical care for companion exotic animals, including wellness, emergency, and referral services. Their clinicians have extensive experience in companion exotic animal medicine and work with other specialists in the hospital to provide advanced care for their patients. The team leaders are board-certified specialists in Zoological Medicine, Avian, and Fish Practice and oversee the cases, working together with veterinary residents and veterinary technicians. They are the largest team of exotic animal and zoological medicine specialists in California. The service works closely with all the specialty groups at the VMTH, coordinating appointments and providing appropriate handling and care during specialty examinations. They also provide care to some injured wildlife, working in conjunction with the California Raptor Center to rehabilitate injured birds of prey. However, they are unable to accept injured bats, deer, raccoons, opossums, or healthy baby birds that have fallen out of a nest. The service routinely sees a wide variety of animals, including birds (parrots, chickens, raptors, passerines, toucans, etc.), reptiles (snakes, lizards, turtles/tortoises), rabbits and rodents (guinea pigs, chinchillas, rats, mice, hamsters, etc.), ferrets, hedgehogs, sugar gliders, amphibians (frogs/toads, salamanders), and fish (ornamental, food-fish, aquarium, research). They also provide referral care for wildlife rehabilitators. Beyond regular appointments, the team runs a dedicated emergency line. A dedicated exotic animal veterinarian is available specifically for emergencies.
